Italia uses the same game mechanisms as Hispania, which in turn is based on the game system of Britannia (by Lewis E. Pulsipher) but differs from that game in some important aspects. But Italia is easier to play and has a shorter playing time than Hispania.
Italia consists out of two games:
Italia I is a three player game "The rise of the Roman Empire" from 400 BC to 80 BC
Italia II is a four player game: "The fall of the Roman Empire" from 290 to 840 AC.
